  • Axpo acquires 20MW/20MWh battery energy storage project from RES and SCR, due to become operational in 2024.

  • RES to deliver construction management, asset management and O&M services and applies its proprietary RESolve system.

  • First energy large-scale storage project for Landskrona Energi.

London, 10 March, 2023 - Global renewable energy company, RES, and large-scale battery developer, Scandinavian Capacity Reserve (SCR), have reached agreement to sell the Elektra Energy Storage Project to Axpo Group. The 20MW/20MWh project, developed by RES and SCR, is located in Landskrona, southern Sweden and will provide ancillary services to help balance the grid for Landskrona Energi. Axpo Group will build the lithium-ion based battery storage project with RES providing construction management services.

The Axpo Group has been active in the development, construction, and commercial optimization of large-scale batteries for several years. Axpo Group leverages its extensive knowledge of international energy trading in the marketing of batteries, which enables optimal use of the storage facilities on the markets for ancillary services as well as spot market trading. Axpo Group has been active in Sweden since 2005. The battery storage project in Sweden is one of multiple projects that Axpo Group will be building across Europe over the next few years.

Matilda Afzelius, CEO - Nordics, RES commented: “Energy storage will play an increasingly important role across Sweden. RES has worldwide experience in battery storage projects and has delivered over 500 MW to support a range of grid functions. RES works closely with municipalities to identify solutions and deliver projects that support both the energy and economic needs locally. Axpo brings a wealth of experience in providing energy products to the market, we look forward to working alongside them to deliver and operate this critical project.”
Frank Amend, Head of Batteries & Hybrid Systems at Axpo Group, said: “We aim to contribute to the energy transition by developing, building, and operating battery storages across Europe and the battery storage project in Sweden is an important step for us. We are looking forward to realising this project with RES in Sweden.”
Carl Hagert, Chairman of the Board, SCR: “A big day for SCR with realizing the first of many projects in our pipeline and transforming this project together with our partners from idea into reality in less than two years. The energy situation in southern Sweden shows the need for more storage capacity to strengthen the grid and reduce emissions from other, more fossil-intensive backup solutions, something this battery will provide when operational.”

The project is adjacent to where Landskrona Energi, who will be responsible for connecting the project to the grid, has a facility. With significant growth of businesses and residences planned for the municipality of Landskrona utilising battery energy storage projects can support the challenge of managing an increase in electricity supply and demand.

Johan Holmstedt, CEO of Landskrona Energi, commented: “We are facing a major electrification of Sweden and there the batteries will fulfill an important function. We are happy to be able to participate early on and contribute to this work and now also have a major player in the form of Axpo with us in this project. At a local level here in Landskrona, the battery will help support and strengthen our electricity grid.”

The deal will see RES support Axpo Group, providing construction management services ahead of the project becoming operational in Q1 2024. RES will also provide asset management and O&M services, and apply its proprietary RESolve system.
